Power System & Power Quality Software Training Tools

Electrotek Concepts has developed several workbooks to train engineers and other personnel in the use of the PSCAD and SuperHarm software programs. Used by our staff in our software training programs, these resources can help you become familiar, in a group or individual setting, with these programs.

SuperHarm Case Study Workbook

Developed by Electrotek Concepts, SuperHarm® is used to perform steady-state frequency domain analysis for harmonic investigations. These investigations are typically performed using steady-state analysis techniques at the individual harmonic frequencies. In general, harmonic producing loads can be modeled as harmonic current sources, and the simulations are used to predict harmonic voltages and currents throughout the customer and utility systems. Overloading of neutral conductors, transformer heating considerations, resonances caused by capacitor applications, and harmonic currents injected onto the utility system can be evaluated in the simulations. The workbook is divided into five volumes:

  • Overview of Harmonics
    • Definitions
    • Sources of Harmonics
    • Frequency Response and Resonances
    • Basic Filter Design
  • Introduction to SuperHarm and TOP, The Output Processor
    • Using SuperHarm
    • SuperHarm Devices
    • Interfacing with TOP, The Output Processor
  • System Modeling Techniques
    • Study Procedures and Model Size
    • Model Verification
    • Modeling Linear Elements
    • Modeling Nonlinear Elements
  • Industrial & Commercial Studies
    • Advanced Features I – Inline Math
    • Harmonics in Commercial Facilities
    • Harmonics in Industrial Plants
    • Advanced Features II – Include and Library Files
  • Distribution System Concerns
    • Advanced Features III – Batch Solutions and Switches
    • ASD Impacts Study
    • Feeder Resonance Study
    • Advanced Features IV – Using Comparatives
    • Capacitor Impact Study
  • Appendix I - Supplemental Cases
  • Appendix II - Nonlinear Load Models

The case studies provided in the workbook are intended to involve the user in an active learning process. Each case study describes the phenomena of interest, illustrates the preparation of input data, and presents selected output. In addition, suggested exercises are provided so the user can more conveniently experiment with the cases.

PSCAD Case Study Workbook

PSCAD® is a general-purpose time domain simulation tool for studying transient behavior of electrical networks. The program includes a comprehensive library of models encompassing all aspects of AC and DC power systems and controls. To augment the component library, the program provides the ability to create user models and libraries with the built-in graphical Component Workshop.

PSCAD enables the user to design complex circuits in a fraction of the time that would otherwise be spent with text-based or semi-graphical tools. Because of advanced technology, circuits that were otherwise too complex to process can now be systematically analyzed.

Studies involving use of the PSCAD fall in two general categories. One is design, which includes insulation coordination, equipment ratings, protective device specification, control systems design, etc. The other is solving operational problems such as unexplained outages or equipment failures.

Developed by Electrotek Concepts, this workbook includes the following sections:

  • Introduction and PSCAD Applications
    • PSCAD Applications
    • Viewing PSCAD Output with TOP
    • Suggested Study Procedure
  • System Modeling Techniques
    • Modeling Linear Power System Elements

The case studies provided in the workbook are intended to involve the user in an active learning process. Each case study describes the phenomena of interest, illustrates the preparation of input data, and presents selected output. In addition, suggested exercises are provided so the user can more conveniently experiment with the cases. Data files for all of the case studies are provided.
